China to Introduce Consumption Tax on Gas Gusslers
For a few years now, I ahve been saying that if I were President of the United States I would introduce a sliding sales tax scale that would tie a cars MPG and weight to the amount of tax paid.
Seems only fair given the difference between a H2 and a Prius are so different. The weight of the H2 tears up roads much faster than a Prius, and with a MPG that is significantly less than a Prius the tax can be justified by the fact that it causes more air pollution.
Kind of a socialistic approach to it… but that is why I guess China is more suited for such action.
According to the Shanghai Daily article Fees to escalate on gas-guzzlers:
It added that energy-efficient automobiles would be given preferential tax treatment, and said that it would make sure polluting old automobiles were taken off the streets and that public transportation would be ramped up.
Looking at this, there are still a lot of details missing, but I hope that this is applicable to commercial vehicles as well.
