Environmental Impacts of E-bikes in Chinese Cities
A very interesting report entitled The Environmental Impacts of E-bikes in Chinese Cities put out by researchers at Berkley, Tsinghua, and UC Davis. The article itself is a well written piece that looks at the recent explosion of electronic bikes that have hit the road, their environmental pros vs. cons, and where improvements need to be made.
Produced by the Berkley UC Berkeley Center for Future Urban Transport, there is a bit of a conflict of interest I think (Volvo was sponsor)… however I think that even with that, this article is an important one as it shows clearly the waste these bikes produce and that there is a need to address the real problem od lead waste. through this article, one can get a real sense of where even electronic bikes can be improved.. and need to be improved before living up to a zero carbon footprint option.
The paper asserts that many riders are actually coming from the buses, and that at the current time, the offset is not as good as it could be. To read the report, you can download the PDF report here To listen to an interesting NPR audio report, go to Electric Bikes Trendy in China
