Sustainability with a Socialistic Twist

September 18th, 2008

Last week while writing up a review of Sinopec’s Sustainability report (PDF Download here), I was caught off guard by the approach they took in constructing the report.

It read more like a CSR report, its focus was not on raw material usage, carbon footprint, and solar panelse, and even their order of priorities when they listed the environment as its third priority (not really all that surprising for an oil firm) it sealed the deal on my

It was something that bothered me in one way, but on the other hand it was refreshingly honest and holistic.. and after spending more time thinking about it, and rereading the report, what I came to conclude was that this report was a relection not of their goal to be a “sustainable company” that moved away from oil because that is what sustainable companies do.  Sure, it was part of their plan, but only a part.. and the rest of the plan was focsed on sustinable business issues like coruption and employee welfare.
