US China Clean Tech Summit: Dow Chemical

the last session I was able to stay for was from Dow, and after seeing it, I have come to once again question the use of statistics – and just how easy it is to play with the denominator of an equation to make one”s self look better… that somehow going through 800,000 barrels a day of oil is ok because you are 20% more efficient now than 20 years ago.

Nari Reddy: Energy Efficiency – Sustainability and Climate Change

Energy Usage
- 5 billion USD per year for power and steam
- Feedstock of 800,000 barrels of oil a day
- 75% self generated power/ 90% steam

global Energy challenges:
- economic progress
- consumption driven by population & affluence
- must assure sufficient, reliable, and environmentally responsible sources of supply that focused on security of supply, sustainability, and competitiveness

Between 1995 and 2005, Dow reduced energy intensity by 22%. Enough to save all the homes and businesses in California for one full year. committed to saving another 25%
Industrial sector:
building sector accounts for opportunity.
76% of all power plant generated electricity is used to operate buildings

advocating energy policy: four pillars
1) energy efficiency and conservation – setting standards
2) greater fuel and feedstock diversity
3) additional gas supply
4) improved infrastructure

keys (to next 30 years):
- traditional fossil fuels will be critical for energy and feedstocks
- energy efficiency and conservation
