China’s 2008 Environmental Scorecard

Caijing has put together a short article summarizing some of the progress that China has achieved in the past year.  Not all good news, Environmental Targets Slip Further from Reach, the article’s primary focus is on the fact that China was not able to push the service industry or reduce energy intensity as planned.

Item

Target by 2010

Energy Intensity

Reduce by 20%

5.38%

26.9%

Major Pollutants

SO2: 32%

COD: 22%

Forest Coverage Rate

Service Industry Employment

R&D Investment

21.4%

As you can see some progress made, particularly with the major pollutants

Where I feeling a bit misled is that I am still not sure a good measure of environmental improvement is accomplished through the service industry.  Obvioysly moving away from heavy polluting industries will only lead to a positive impact, but Google is a huge energy consumer too.
