Shanghai Green Roof

Perhaps one of the best things about working with people passionate about the environment, sustainability, and the power of education is that you come up with a huge idea.

Like greening a 400 square meter roof in the middle of downtown Shanghai

Green Roofs are something in China that have yet to really get much traction, and when they do, they are more likely to be of the astroterf variety than to be of live botanic variety.

So, we set out to change all that, and are happy to announce that as part of a wider Earth Day event platform, Hands On Shanghai and Greenovate will be installing one of Shanghai’s first true green roofs.

The first one (picture above), is going to be a bit of trial and error with our hopes to develop several others that will over the long term not only produce produce, but will become platforms that teach others about the value of nature within the city.

So, if you are in Shanghai on the 22nd (3 weeks away) and want to participate, please let us know.  We are looking for corporate partners, green thumbs, volunteers, a jazz band, and the curious.

You can leave a response, or trackback from your own site.

As long as the funding comes in (trying to raise 50k in next 2 weeks!), we will have full days on April 18, 19, and 22 where Hands On (www.handsonshanghai.com) volunteers will clean, prepare, and install the new roof.

    Hope you can join!

    Hi Rich,

I am interested in volunteering in that project but can’t find additional information on handsonshanghai.com. Can you please send me some details?

    Thanks
    Malte

This is definitely a good use of available space. It helps the environment and provides for the future of mankind. Kudos!!

    hello,

I am a Scottish post-graduate who just completed my masters in environmental studies and sustainability science at Lund University, Sweden.

I hope to be visiting China at the end of February this year (2010) for a few months and would lve to get involved as a volunteer with any green roof organisation that you are involved with in Shanghai…

Please let me know if there is anything at all I can do. My undergraduate degree was in law, and I have very basic Chinese.

Kind regards, and looking forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience,

    Lucy Brown
