Green Shipping Needed ASAP
Wednesday, April 15, 2009 20:37While planning out my next article for Supply Chain Asia on green logistics, I came across a Guardian the article Health risks of shipping pollution have been ‘underestimated’ that suggests largest 15 ships pollute 760m cars worth of SOX.
A figure I find stunning.
The calculations of ship and car pollution are based on the world’s largest 85,790KW ships’ diesel engines which operate about 280 days a year generating roughly 5,200 tonnes of SOx a year, compared with diesel and petrol cars which drive 15,000km a year and emit approximately 101gm of SO2/SoX a year.
Imagine for a moment that these numbers are true, and what that means for globalization as countries introduce measures to effectively account for carbon. Imagine the fight over which country (producer or buyer) that is likely to occur.
