Job Posting: Pacific Environment China Program Co-Director
Wednesday, June 3, 2009 6:51Pacific Environment seeks an experienced and energetic China Program Co-Director with a demonstrated passion for the environment and social justice. Pacific Environment’s China Program works in partnership with community based environmental groups throughout China to fight water pollution, protect endangered marine species, and combat climate change. The China Program Co-Director will be responsible for developing and implementing campaigns in cooperation with the Co-Director in our Beijing office as well as outreach and fundraising in the United States.
The China Program Co-Director will work closely with staff and partners based in China and the US to develop and implement successful environmental campaigns. The China Program Co-Director will work with the Executive Director and the Development and Communications Team to build the China Program through strategic development, public outreach, and fundraising.
The ideal candidate for the position will have at least 3-7 years of experience working with environmental or civil society programs with a particular focus in Asia and China. The ideal candidate will have proven success developing and implementing fundraising, communications and programmatic strategies. Self-starters, natural leaders, creative thinkers and team players are encouraged to apply for this position. This position will report to the Executive Director and will be based in our main office in San Francisco, California.
The China Program Co-Director will be responsible for:
• Developing and implementing environmental campaigns in China in cooperation with our Beijing office and grassroots environmental organizations throughout China;
• Fundraising for Pacific Environment’s China program, including grant-writing, reporting, and prospecting for new support;
• Publicizing Chinese environmental issues and campaigns in the U.S. through writing articles, public speaking, and working with the media;
• Providing capacity-building support to Chinese environmental NGOs based on organizational development needs;
• Conducting regular field visits to China to work hand-in-hand with grassroots partners on environmental projects, including organizing working group meetings and annual conference with Chinese partners (approximately 3-4 international trips per year);
• Supporting the development of a coalition of Chinese NGOs working on water pollution, marine conservation and climate change issues;
• Overseeing a subgrants program distributing funds to Chinese partners;
• Researching, monitoring, and analyzing environmental and civil society issues in China;
• Establishing media contacts and acting as a spokesperson for the China program;
• Overseeing the production and dissemination of reports, project and campaign outreach materials, citizens’ guides, fact sheets, and web pages;
• Interpreting and translating between English and Chinese for program work when necessary;
• Developing and managing the China Program budget, including revenue and expenses in the US and China;
• Managing overall China Program strategy development and growth;
• Supervising one China Program Associate;
• Serving as a member of the Senior Management Team;
• Other tasks as needed.
Skills and Experience Needed:
• MANDATORY: Fluent speaking and communicating skills in Mandarin Chinese and English;
• Superior written and verbal communications skills;
• Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills;
• Excellent attention to detail;
• Excellent interpersonal and networking skills and ease in working cooperatively with people of different cultures;
• Demonstrated capacity for independent management of multiple projects;
• Enthusiastic collaboration with other staff and organizations;
• Ability to travel nationally and internationally;
• Self-motivated and able to work under pressure;
• An energetic team player and good leadership skills;
• Authorized to work in the United States;
• Experience managing a team is a plus;
• BA/BS in relevant discipline, such as international relations, environmental studies or Chinese (candidates with an advanced degree are encouraged to apply);
• Personal commitment to environmental and social justice and a sense of humor are essential!
