While preparing my most recent article for Supply China Asia on Green Buildings, two stories came across my desk that highlight the efforts of two global firms in the beverage industry.
They are stories that I hope will set precedents for future facilities, that will force competitors to raise their own bars, and will force executives to begin looking at how to make further reductions in other areas of the business.
1. PepsiCo Opens Green Beverage Plant in China
PepsiCo opened a new manufacturing plant in China specifically designed to be more environmentally friendly than conventional company facilities.
The company expects the plant, located in western China in the city of Chongqing, will use 22 percent less water and 23 percent less energy than other PepsiCo plants in the country.
2. Tetra Pak opens plant run by green electricity in China
Packaging company Tetra Pak announced the inauguration of its latest packaging material plant that runs completely on clean, renewable electricity, generated primarily from wind power, in Hohhot
The facility in Hohhot, the first manufacturing plant in Inner Mongolia, consumes an estimated 20 million kilowatt hours of electricity generated from renewable sources, which results to an estimated reduction of 16,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions annually.
