10 Fold Increase in Nuke by 2020

Taking an economy from coal based to one that is significantly reliant on renewable energies is no easy feat, but if there is one country that can do it.. it is China.  I think.

Recently, that has meant huge investments in wind, solar, and biomass.  Investments that are sure to begin chipping away at that goal as 2020 comes closer, but the one energy that we have not heard much about was nuclear energy.

Until now

China is planning for an installed nuclear power capacity of 86 gigawatts (gW) by 2020, up nearly 10-fold from the 9 gW capacity it had by the end of last year, two people familiar with the matter said.

The revised target for nuclear power is part of the government’s efforts to increase the share of alternative energy in the predominantly coal-based energy mix.

The goal, which is part of an alternative energy development road map covering 2009-20, seeks to have at least 12 gW of installed nuclear power capacity by 2011, the sources said.
