JUCCCE Chinese Mayoral Training Video Clip

Anyone following @juccce last month saw a wave of updates from founder Peggy Liu as their first mayoral training kicked off.

18 months in the planning and  formalized at the November 2008 JUCCCE conference, the 8 day session:

50 mayors from all over China gathered in Beijing to learn from worldwide experts about how to create greener cities. Besides an intensive lecture series and multiple group breakout sessions to discuss how better to develop sustainably, the mayors were given exclusive on-site tours of the Olympic Village (the world’s largest Gold LEED-ND project) and the Inncon Coca-Cola PET recycling facility.

Without a doubt, and regardless of whether or not China hits a specific environmental statistic, one of the greatest needs right now is to build awareness and capacity at the highest levels… and programs like this one bring that.

Certainly it wil take more time, and certainly it will take more than 50 mayors to attend, but this is a step in the right direction and I am certain that Peggy and her team have been huddling up to plan out the next training session.

JUCCCE China Clean Energy Forum: China Energy 2050

Mark Levine from Lawrence Berkeley made another quick appearance following Marc Porat to show some preliminary data on China energy consumption.  Cannot cite the stats at this point, but

Energy Demand in China
- Industry sector growth will from from 11.1% in the 2000  – 2005 to less than 5% energy growth over the next 20 years
- buildings from 8.5% to less than one

Need to reduce energy intensity quickly to avoid a crisis.

Doing this will be one of China’s biggest challendges

full report will be available online in January or February of 2009

JUCCCE China Clean Energy Forum: Mark Levine

Mark Levine: Lawrence Berkley Labs

Myth vs. reality on China

- cooperation between countries is essential.  currently great mistrust between the two groups, and that in prevents real discussion.

myth: subsidized pricing gives China an advantage
fact: energy prices in China are @ international level or higher.
GZ resident pays USD.16/ Kwh more than SF & coal prices in China are higher than US

myth: China is profligate in its use of energy
reality: China uses 1/8th the average of US resident & 1/4 EU

Myth: China will overtake US as CO2 emitter
reaity: not so fast… in 2008 sure, but that isn’t relevant
- on a percapita basis, China is actually below global average
- on a cumulative basis, which is the really relevant number  for GW, China is FAR FAR less than US

Myth: China is doing little to control CO2
reality: target 20% intensity reduction by 2010 (1.5 billion metric ton reduction) – on path for 1 billion+

Myth: China is inefficient in its energy use
Reality: Industry consumes 70%, with energy intensities declining.

Myth: China is hogging oil imports
Reality: China imports, while growing, are very small trade (currently 4 million import of 55 million total traded)

Myth: China uses more coal than anyone
Reality: on per capita basis, China consumes just slightly more than the US.
