One of the perks of being a country with a huge sum of cash in the coffers is the ability to make investments in projects like the one that the Shanghai government has just announced.

To provide 20% subsidies for 10 million CFLs in the next year. That is on top of the already 50% subsidy that is being offered nationwide. Which means that CFLs are selling for the cheap.

A great thing if your goal is to reduce the energy and carbon footprint of your people, and aren’t bothered about the added mercury floating around.

Global Sources offers users access to a large number of supplier profiles, and fortunately for us they are able to leverage that database to construct a variety of research reports by industry.

Recently, in the area of LED lights/cluster lamps, global Sources posted the article Conversion efficiency, thermal resistance steer R&D in Xiamen’s LED industry that details some of the developments in LED products, and players in the market

LED lighting is a very efficient means to illuminate a room, but due to cost and a belief that they are not soft enough, LED have had a slow takeup. Governments use them for stop lights, and thanks to breakthroughs in technology the cost will come down in time.

One of the firms working on this, as highlighted by the article, is Xiamen Guangpu Electronics Co. Ltd, who are:

is cooperating with Hong Kong-based Astri in developing 15.4in super-thin high-brightness linear LED backlights. The company employs more than 120 R&D personnel, which include 18 senior engineers, 12 researchers and more than 90 engineers.

An excellent starting point for those looking to learn more about LED, go here to read the rest of the story. If looking to learn more about LEDs from Global Sources, and are interested in a full report, you may be interested in their LEDs & LED Displays Report
